Caveats aside, its not a bad indicator to the size of effort that's required if you are serious about learning beyond basic survival level. If your just studying on 15 minute Duolingo daily sessions that's 24 years!
Fluent Mandarin in 90 days
So with intensive study can you reach fluency in 90 days? With people claiming to have learned a language in 90 days, so now you can too? They give us high expectations just to be crushed when we fail to meet them. For me, after 90 days of study at 250 hours including classroom and 1:1 teacher support I could just about talk about my daily routine, my hobbies and my family. I've been tracking my progress and for me its turned into years of committed practice.
TLDR; believe in yourself, set your expectations for years of study, enjoy the journey.
